Why is Affiliate Marketing the Business Model for Newbies?

Have you ever been a part of an MLM, Network Marketing, Direct Sales Company? Affiliate Marketing isn't the same thing so don't expect for it to be, there are many differences. I will share many of the ways that Affiliate Marketing is different and although I'm not saying that the other types of work from home business models aren't legit, just that it's better, especially for beginners.

  • No house and/or hotel parties
  • No harassing friends and family
  • No driving all over town doing presentations
  • No 5 foot rule ~ sharing your “business opportunity” with anyone and everyone who comes within 5 feet of you.
  • No stocking and/or buying products to qualify
  • No customer support ~ customers contact the company that also ships the products
High Ticket Affiliate Commissions

How to find the best products to promote

First of all, let me debunk a myth that is very prominent within the Affiliate Marketing arena. High Ticket Products are difficult to earn with, so you as a beginner should start out with a low ticket affiliate program like Amazon, eBay, Shopify, WooCommerce, Share-a-Sale etc….. I ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE!

It takes the same amount of effort to promote a High Ticket Item as it does to promote low ticket items …….. Would you rather earn a $1,000 commission like the 1 shown above on 1 sale or have to sell an item with a $1 commission 1,000 times?

I'm not saying that you can't earn a good living sharing lower cost items, I'm just saying that it will take much longer and that as long as you're going to be working hard, you might as well be paid well. It'z all about maximizing your return on investment of both time and money as it will absolutely take a focused and driven effort. Earning what you are worth is very rewarding, making the journey much more enjoyable especially over time.

That being said, the products and/or services that you promote should be something that you believe in and can share with confidence. The best way to make sure that what you are promoting meets that criteria is for you to have experience with the service and/or products.

  1. I’m happy that you’ve now started coming up with a complete guide book for affiliate marketing! And it’s so very affordable! I hope a lot more beginners out there will take this opportunity to get the book and learn more on the concept of affiliate marketing.

It’s definitely one of the most sustainable businesses to do in the long run.

  2. Great job Tony, a very detailed and perfect introduction to affiliate marketing and I can’t disagree more than the only difference in a small earning to a big-ticket that brings full time income is the type of content on website. If you target broke people living paycheck to paycheck you will find a lot of low ticket sales, but if you target affluent people you can find your sweet spot in the commission that will fund a lifestyle change from struggling to full time income online.

  3. Affiliate marketing is a great way for those who are new to making money online to get started. Like you say you don’t need to sell anything, which is great because selling is a very difficult skill to learn if you’ve never done it before. Promoting products by sharing your own personal experience is much easier, and more enjoyable too. It is an industry that is easy to get started in too given there aren’t any big expenses, and technical skills are minimal. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I totally agree that Wealthy Affiliate is the best place to learn about the industry, and the steps you need to take.

I would highly recommend this article to anyone looking to get into affiliate marketing in 2020, or anyone actually who is looking to make money online. This guide makes an otherwise daunting industry very simple to understand and fills a newcomer with confidence. Thanks Tony!

About your remark and to go for high ticket items, I actually never thought I could do it, so you definitely changed my mind and I am going to GO for it , thanks !

Affiliate marketing as I’ve always loved to emphasize is a very simple business to do online, the only thing that can affect your success is not gaining concrete prior knowledge of it from a reliable source. This guide you’ve made will be of help to newbies and help them know how to go about making it .

  8. Hey, Tony,

Great article! It was very inspiring. Glad to hear this turned out to be a good opportunity for you.

Now, regarding affiliate marketing, I’ve heard a lot about high-ticket items. How much do they typically cost? I’m assuming it’s something in the thousands?

The niche I’m in is too competitive and commissions aren’t that high, so I was looking for other alternatives. What are some good options for high-ticket items?

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to your reply.

  10. You are absolutely right. Since the Affiliate Marketing Business model is not, by any means, a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme, it requires anyone who wants to be successful in Affiliate marketing to put in a lot of time, perseverance, and dedication. It makes total sense that you would want to sell quality products with a high Return on Investment (ROI) and earn a $1000 commission!

I have been involved with Amazon, and I am moving away from them since they cut down once more the commission rate of many of their products. I am signing up for other affiliate programs selling the same product for 10X the commission rate! And guess what? The price of the product is the same as with Amazon, and if some cases are even cheaper than with Amazon. So, the customers don’t get slam with the cost of the higher commission that the affiliate marketer gets!

  11. Awesome info about affiliate marketing Tony. This just goes to show that the skills you acquire when you learn affiliate marketing can help you to promote just about anything – a $2 keepsake on Amazon or a high ticket product with $1000 commission – they both take the same knowledge and effort, you just have to know your target market and how to position the offer to them.

PS. I’d rather promote the higher ticket item for $1000 commissions any day.

  14. I am a huge fan of affiliate marketing, it is such a fun way to make money online and with no upfront expense either, which for me is what really sets it apart from most MLM schemes. I don’t see why I should have to pay to promote products and services of a company! I also love the freedom I have to add links into my posts that make me an income.

  15. Really enjoyed this post, thank you. Being a coach myself, it’s always good to go back to the basics and affiliate marketing is a great business model for newbies. I also completely agree that as a beginner you don’t have to start out with low ticket programs such as Amazon & eBay etc. High ticket products, as you mention, take just the same amount of effort. The Insiders Guide book looks very interesting so I’m going to take a look at that as well. Thank you 🙂

  16. It is a great post for people on a lookout for online passive income. Affiliate marketing has more merits than demerits. You tend to live a life of freedom at your own pace. And, you do make money online if you put the right effort as in any other business.

Your advice about selling high ticket items is quite relevant as selling a high ticket items requires almost the same effort as a low ticket one. I used to believe that as a newbie I need to target the low ticket items. But, I see the point her every clear and have changed my mindset immediately.

Thanks and writing on this time-relevant topic. it will help all trying to make online passive income to find a clear solution in Affiliate Marketing.

  23. Hi Tony,

I am very curious about the whole Affiliate Marketing area. I still feel very unsure about it, and the main factor is how much time needs to be put in to learn what I need to understand going forward?

I read some conflicting ideas … such as low ticket versus high ticket items … am definitely trying to find out more!

Thank you for all those links!

  24. Yeah, I guess, I kind of bought into a version of that lie/myth. I was told that it’s equally manageable to create a business around the low ticket products as it is with high ticket ones. From my experience, I can tell, for sure, that’s not the case. And for me, this is finally the tipping point. I will be switching focus to a completely different niche. And thank you for that, I appreciate it.

Also, the program you shared sounds very tempting. I will check it out. Thank you for the heads up. Cheers, Tony.

  25. Hi there Tony,

As much as I also love MLM, I get to agree that it requires much more work compared to Affiliate marketing. I actually had a good laugh with the ‘5 foot rule’ hahaha. It brought back a lot of moments when I was still active in my MLM business. It is also true that no stocking is required, which also means that the start up cost is low and less risky. I witnessed people who stocked up 4-6 months supplies in order to achieve a higher rank. It would not be required in terms of affiliate marketing business model.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Regards,

    Tam.

  26. Thank you for this information. Affiliate marketing is the best business model to follow because it just makes more sense and is easier to follow than a typical MLM or other related program. All you have do to succeed is start a website and become a seller for various companies that have an affiliate program that you can join. The concept is actually very simple and can be very lucrative if you know how to get people to your website through SEO or other means. A program called Wealthy Affiliate teaches people how to set up a website and become a successful affiliate marketer by following the training provided. There have been many proven success stories because of a helpful community within the platform. If you are thinking of starting an online business you should check into affiliate marketing and Wealthy Affiliate.

In your view should I only concentrate on big ticket items as I am trying to spread the costs?

  33. Thanks Tony for your insight on this.

I do believe affiliate marketing is an amazing way to make money online but the issue is that it can take some time before one starts to see good results from this line of business. Of course, it has risk factors involved but the sad thing is that not a lot of people are willing to take the risk to run this business because of one reason or the other.

Affiliate marketing can be rewarding if done right but can also be a waste of time if done the wrong way. I have seen a lot of people that have wasted a lot of time without achieving anything in this business but also I have seen a lot of people that have achieved a lot from affiliate marketing.

So my advice for anyone thinking of becoming an affiliate marketer is that they need to be aware of the pros and cons of this business before entering and also have the patience to build this business over time before it starts earning a reasonable sum.

  37. Finding a myriad of different possibilities of working online was my reality for a couple of years. I did try some of them. I did lose time and sometimes money with some of them. Affiliate marketing is the first I do not feel like losing either. The first thing I liked about it is that I focus on creating content, not sales. Useful content which may actually help people in some issues I choose to write about and offer my expertise. Then, there’s working literally whenever I feel like-in the evening, at down, during the night… The work done ones, can payout for a long time when it’s done correctly and it only takes to deliver honest, quality content. No need for actual active selling. It will happen when you become a trusted source of information. Not to mention that you can start it without any (or any big) investment, apart from your time and work.

  42. Thanks for that wealth of information. I agree with what you say about MLM. I have been involved in a few over the years and never liked the concept of selling to your friends and recruiting. When you think about it, MLM was developed in the ’70s, long before there was an internet, and they are stuck with that marketing plan.

Affiliate marketing is great because its all online, and all the training is online, no selling to friends and family, there are millions of people on the internet looking to buy. I’ve been building an affiliate marketing website for 2 years now and I think that learning how to build a website and drive traffic to that website, then monetize it is very valuable knowledge.

Your post is a useful resource for affiliate marketers. Thanks for the info.

I am truly grateful to witness that particular ‘myth’ well and truly busted. I am still in the very early stages of affiliate marketing, having only just completed my first year. Yet, even in this short space of time I have been constantly reminded that we should be happy with the small stuff. Should the higher-priced posts only start after you are seeing a decent amount of traffic? I appreciate the help!

Some even called themselves as affiliates instead of independant distributors. It’s actually quite confusing because the monetizing strategy still require you to enroll new members whereas, for online affiliates, you just need to promote products.

Thank you so much, sir, for this motivation, as a beginner I believe it is important to be getting word of encouragement from people like you. please correct me if I’m wrong, I believe that there is a fine line between selling $1 product and $1000 product; this is because the audience is not the same hence the approach needs to differ. as a result, I believe consistent engagement with your audience is key in building a good relationship full of trust.

As you mentioned already the convenience of low cost at low risk, no barging friends or family to join or buy from you, no stocks,…What I would add maybe is, the reason I joined it, location free. As I do still soccer on decent level, I like to be and stay free in terms of location, I think many “”unsettled” people would like too. It looks you rooked it already. I would agree with the point you laid down on the affiliate marketing business model, there are six. Also with the idea that you can have both high tickets and low tickets.

If we can have all the opportunities to have these tickets at the same time it will be good. Since our task as affiliate marketers are to promote any products available, affordable and which people can trust, these can be done in just one task, a review. Nothing is bad in trying all the possibilities.

  58. What an excellent overview of affiliate marketing for 2020. In this day and age, it’s never been easier and cheaper to make money or start a business online. With affiliate marketing, there is so much potential to make a living promoting other companies’ products and services.

You made an excellent distinction between high ticket and low ticket programs. Low ticket affiliate programs are fine, but not always the best place for newbies to start. As an affiliate marketer myself, I’ve found more success with high ticket products than with low ticket ones. I’m not at the point where it happens so often, but I’ve had success promoting high affiliate products. So anything is possible with promoting any type of affiliate program.

The ebook looks really good (along with the awesome bonuses). Maybe not now, but I’ll bookmark this page and revisit the ebook. It looks something worthwhile to look into for sure.

  59. Hey, Tony,

Thanks for sharing this info – you clearly know your stuff! I am learning more about affiliate marketing and it has really changed how I surf the internet now. I can see affiliate marketing EVERYWHERE! And if people aren’t monetizing their content, they’re nuts and missing a huge opportunity.

Would love to hear your thoughts on saturation? Is there such a thing? I worry about being “late to the game”. Looking forward to learning more from you. Thanks!!

  60. I am just beginning to get the hang of affiliate marketing and I am wondering where was this program all along. This article sets out a few details that i am just finding out and the best point is that you can conduct a business without having to handle physical products. Also you can get creative and check out all the many companies offering affiliate partnerships. Of course you would have to ramp up those marketing skills to get the best results. Thank you for the details.

  62. This was an eye opening article.  I have been doing exactly you should said I didn’t have to:  Start with low priced items while I “get my feet wet”.   I’m going to brainstorm for some higher ticket items.

And now a question.  On the YouTube video I watched, you were showing a site that told you where you ranked on the search sites.  What is that?  Where would I find it?

  64. I’m an affiliate marketer and I totally agree with you; it takes the same amount of effort to promote a program where you have the potential to earn $1000 per sale as one where you earn $1 per sale. But there is a difference, I believe, in the way we promote it.

The way we promote a product that is lower in cost will be different than the way we promote a $1000 product. That’s because the audience is different. People who can afford $100 might not necessarily be able to afford $1000.

Can you share a few tips on how you promote high ticket programs? That would be greatly appreciated!

  65. Hi Tony, nice post about Affiliate Marketing. I’m new here so it definitely help me to read your post. I would rather make 1000 transactions for a small commission then to make one big commission and it stopped there. When you generate consistence income no matter how small the dollar amount is, it motivate you and it make you feel good every time you see the number goes up. Good luck in 2020!

I understand that trying to sell a low ticket item to product the value of a high ticket option is sometimes easier to start with but surely a subscription will give you the same amount of income each month?

  67. Hi Tony,

Wow, you’ve been in affiliate marketing, you’re certainly an OG lol. The insiders guide sounds like a great beginners guide to affiliate marketing.

I’ve been doing affiliate marketing four a couple of years part time; but I do still see myself very much as a beginner!

$1.99 is a complete bargain as well, especially seeing as most guides cost in the region of hundreds of pounds/ dollars.

I’m purchasing & looking forward to working through it!

  68. Hey Tony… First of all… Thank you, I appreciate your service!  Look this is a great introduction to Affiliate Marketing.  What you say about high ticket items vs low ticket items was a great perspective.  “It takes the same amount of effort to promote a High Ticket Item as it does to promote low ticket items.”  As consumers ourselves we really do have a lot of opportunity for promoting products or services that we are knowledgeable about already.  Affiliate marketing is absolutely a great way to get started.  What affiliate marketing programs do you suggest for getting started?

In today’s day in age of side hustled and working from home. Affiliate marketing fits right into that category. As you had pointed out it is a good route for even beginners. There are so many niches, so many things people like to read is crazy.

A quick fact check (just a google search lol) backs your info up as well. Affiliate Marketing is the real deal.

  71. You are absolutely right with the MLM! It has happened to me, and especially “the parties at home”, the “chronic laughter”, the good vibes that you have to have all day, the loud music at the events!

And it is true, the issue of stock must be handled, and there is always the idea of having to deal directly with people.

I really like this idea of affiliate marketing for what you describe. And I found it very interesting that you explained the similarity of promoting an expensive product and a cheap one. Now that I think about it, it makes sense!

What cost should I consider to start this path? Are there any fixed costs to maintain any page? Is it necessary to have your own website?

Thank you very much for explaining me a little more about this topic

  73. Yes, affiliate marketing is a very good way to make money online and with the right support it is doable for everybody. You correctly say that the best products to promote are the ones you believe in or you have experience with. I think therefore that the best way do to this is to make a list of your passions, hobbies and interests and then choose the one or ones that you can really study, talk, research and above all write about on a daily basis. You can then easily build out your website by adding relevant content, so that you will reach an audience. The products you will then promote will follow logically from your niche.

  75. This was a great reminder for me why I enjoy the affiliate marketing model. The main reasons being that there are no customers to deal with, no downline to deal with, and best of all no stock and shipping to worry about.

However, I have been selling mainly low ticket items. Luckily it is not a lot of work to promote these items as the articles were done ages ago and I just keep getting repeat business, but now you have made me think maybe I should look at promoting more high ticket items in the future. I will certainly take a look at the guide that you have shared.

Thank you for sharing this information.  I sometimes find it difficult to determine if I should promote a low priced product, or one that is deemed “higher end”.  I once tried to gain sales from expensive diamond jewelry, that was an epic failure, but I found that low cost jewelry does in fact sell well.  This information has helped me decide to focus more on the lower priced items, and leave the higher priced items for the “salesmen”.

I agree with you. I learned a long time ago that if you don’t believe in a product or service, it’s going to be very difficult to  successfully promote it. Affiliate marketing is a fine choice for those new to internet marketing because your primary goal is to promote a product. No worries about presentations, selling to friends and family, etc.

  84. About the affiliate marketing myth and what you’ve explained serves as an encouragement to me as I’m new to affiliate marketing. A lot of folks do say this that high ticket programs are very difficult to promote especially to newbies.

But sometimes it got me thinking like “Are people not making money from the so called high ticket programs? If yes, then is not the same effort those people put into their businesses that you’ll also do?” I’m very glad you came up with this and gave a thoughtful example. When one is creative and put in a lot of effort to build their businesses, they will really excel on any high ticket program.

I think what makes affiliate marketing more fun is when you have passion for what you do and can relate it to anyone with confidence.

I’m new at affiliate marketing so it was great that I landed on your site. It is very easy to start affiliate marketing, you just have to be ready to put in your research and do your blogging. Affiliate marketing though, that’s where it’s at and you make very good points throughout.

I like that you’re selling a book to get started too, that’s great because a lot of us don’t know where to start and it’s priced to sell.

Using the internet to earn a living is an interesting way in this modern world. Well, there is still potential in it. Hence, there are too many ways to do it. It is good to start out working with a good opportunity and build it up from there. The main consideration is the sustainability in the long run. Be persistent in putting the efforts in the chosen money making opportunity. And monitor the results as it goes. Make relevant adjustments when necessary. Well, there are too many ways to do it right now. People will be confuse easily. Based on my experiences, it is good to start with something more simple at first. Affiliate marketing is a good start. What necessary is having the right amount of focus on one opportunity instead of too many. Which can be confusing for a newbie.

Unlike direct sales, there are no products to keep up with, store, or figure out how to deliver them to the consumer. Instead, you can focus on your passion and sell the knowledge you have about that passion.

  98. Hi,
This is a very good introduction to affiliate marketing.although the website is very busy in appearance it actually has a strategy theme running right through it.
There is a very brief introduction to affiliate marketing presumably to attract more solid interaction at a later stage.
It the offers some physical evidence regarding who the website owner is what he did and current update on where he is his up to date life.
There are offers even though they are not free with relatively modest amounts to pay.
an assessment of pros and cons against MLM and the relative low barriers to entry within the affiliate marketing worls is useful too.
The comments of real people backing the proposition is a nice touch though perhaps a tad overdone and then we go into a plethora of articles on products scams and many more topics that are pretty mixed and hurled together in what appears in no particular order.
Then into an array of other advertising product. The website has a genuine feel about it but has a lot to go through in order to pick out the essentials of the message attempted to be conveyed.

  105. Hi Tony,

The beginner’s guide to Affiliate Marketing for 2020 article you wrote is quite to the point and inspiring.

The fact that targetting high ticket programs/products is the best way to go is shocking to some; the idea of high ticket items are harder to sell is just false.

I think that as long as the traffic is targeted and is interested in the item, there is no viable reason why sales wouldn’t happen.

I invite all new affiliate marketers to join you, Tony, as a training and guidance from someone who has been in the trenches and knows what he is talking about can make all the difference.

  110. Tony,
What you say makes affiliate marketing seem easy.  I have wanted to get into this business since I retired.  It has been difficult finding a program that teaches you how to do it and is not a scam.

I wasted $99 for one program that said they would teach you all you needed to know AND you would get a Private coach.  The problem was that the “coach’s” job was to sell you their completely guaranteed program that cost only $15,000.  I did not fall for their SCAM.  I am very concerned about someone trying to scam me again.

Since you have been doing affiliate marketing going on 11 years do you know of any legitimate programs on the internet that teaches you all you need to know?  Things like how to build a website, where to find companies that hire affiliates, how to attract customers to your website, that will answers questions you might have, etc.
Especially programs that don’t charge hundreds or thousands of dollars and keep trying to sell you more stuff.

    Thanks,
    Leo

  122. Outstanding guide for beginner affiliate marketers here. Your experience and expertise in the area is really valuable for those just starting out especially. We live in a day and age where shopping malls are closing by the day, and more and more people are doing their shopping online, so it makes sense to try and capitalize on that fact. I definitely would rather earn $1,000 for 1 item than $1 for a 1,000 items, excellent point. The Insider’s Guide looks like a fascinating read, and I’m looking forward to checking it out further through your link here. Thanks for a great recommendation!

  124. I feel grateful to have found this article. There seems to be a lot of opinions flying around regarding the idea of starting an online business. But this definitely puts things into a better perspective for me. You’re absolutely right about promoting high-ticket items. Truly, the same efforts would probably be required to promote lower ticket items. I think the insider’s guide would further offer more clarity. I really need to get started. Thanks for sharing

  125. Congratulations on persevering with Affiliate marketing. I remember you from a few years ago when I was a member of Wealthy Affiliate. I rejoined late last year but I haven’t seen you around on the site. I am also going for a life on my own terms in affiliate marketing as both a retirement income and a location independent income so that I can spend time overseas with my grandchildren. We all have our own reasons for choosing this life I guess. I’m interested that you have created your own book on affiliate marketing. I’m sure this would be great for people who can’t afford to go premium at Wealthy affiliate and I’m sure that you would be a great initial support to affiliate marketing newbies.

  126. I’ve been in affiliate marketing for about 5 months now. That has taught me a lot about how it works. It really does come down to time management. It is easy to waste time and procrastinate. And get distracted. So you want to be maximizing your returns at the same time. Amazon for example has very low commissions. So this is okay when you already have lots of traffic, I also agree that it’s important to focus on things that you are passionate about. Nobody likes to be sold and tricked. they want to see you as a reliable experts.

  128. There are so many online business now; that affiliate marketing is extremely required now. Therefore, I truly believe its a double win. The employer earns as the business gains customers. If it weren’t for a site that was an affiliate of Pureflix, I would have never heard of it till this day.

  129. This looks really interesting and I am very tempted to have a look.  Does this guide talk about a number of different opportunities or is a leader for one particular route to affiliate marketing.

If the latter can you tell me why you would endorse that route?

Thanks I am keen to do my due diligence before launching.

  130. Hello Tony,

to see you share this beginner’s guide to affiliate marketing for 2020. Indeed, among all the online business models available, affiliate marketing has been proven to be the most beginner’s friendly model.

I have heard severally of MLM and i even know people struggling doing it. Although affiliate marketing requires a lot of learning and hardwork, it has been proven to be the most lucrative for a lot of persons. I want to do affiliate marketing.

I’d rather promote high ticket Products because a sale would yield a nice commission. I have been advised several times to go for high tickets program promotion because it takes similar effort to promote both low and high tickets program.

Thanks for the tips and your offer.

    Warm regards!

  131. Enjoyed the benefits you lists for affiliate marketing.  Nothing worse than having to stock product to try and sell.  The affiliate model makes a whole lot more sense.  Really great point to focus on the high ticket items.  I have done affiliate marketing before and typically went for the smaller ticket items thinking it would be an easier sale.  I will try the higher ticket items.  Cheers
